Anatomy of Social Innovation

What is Social innovation; is it a means or an end? What indicators show us that we're progressing and where do we look for lessons? This blog charts my exploration of these questions. Hello, my name is Maura, let's dive in.

Perhaps I should start a new blog, a catalogue of bad ideas. Entry under “F” Fracking.

Consensus (Direct Democracy @ Occupy Wall Street)

What is the process of change? How do groups share ideas? Public forum has learned so much in the past year. I am amazed, impressed, inspired and proud of New York, my heart is with you!

FailCon →

What can tech teach sustainability? How to learn! Failure provides valuable information to a system but our cultural proclivity is to sweep shameful failure under the rug; what a waste. I prefer the approach of FailCon, an upcoming conference for tech-preneurs. Their invitation: “Its time to stop being afraid of failure and start embracing it.” Right on.

Last night I started reading Mutual Aid by Prince and Communist Pyotr Alexeyevich Kropotkin and I stayed up way to late! The first chapters from Russian zoologist, activist, philosopher, economist, writer, scientist, evolutionary theorist, geographer and one of the world’s foremost anarcho-communists – pause for a air – is informing my constantly expanding understanding of system dependencies, exciting stuff. Hard to believe this book was published over 100 years ago, its themes are fresh and relevant to today, in his own way, Kropotkin references cosmopolitan trends such as biomimicry and systems thinking.  More updates as they come.

Natural Change: Catalysing leadership for sustainability →

So needed! This just published paper from WWF came out today.

Its a highly interesting new publication on the didactics & psychology behind the WWF’s ‘Natural Change’ approach to leadership development, which is rooted is many indigenous traditions (e.g. the vision quests from the Navaho) and eastern wisdom traditions.

Some powerful and valuable conclusions on how to facilitate a leadership learning programme that changes people at identity & values level, and especially how to communicate about it to the public.

Leadership Lessons From Burning Man →

Fast Company article on a subject that often captures my imagination: What does horizontal leadership look and feel like? What does it feel when you lead out of common interest not common adversity. Each year, I’m more tempted to brave the wind and sand to experience these leadership lessons in the desert myself.
